In keeping with our study of First Nations food cultivation, we thought we should do some plant features.  This tiny beauty, a little worse for ware from transplanting is our native Amaranth.  The common name for it around these parts is “Indian Strawberry”.  An annual it produces small red seed clusters that are sweet and refreshing.  The fruit is so delicate that washing it releases all the red dye and disrupts the flavor so you need to be careful where you pick it.  We’ll be trying to propagate this lovely addition to our back yard, wish us luck as it seems to be quite particular about where it will grow.
